Gillette Tech Razor-Gold-In Case, Razor in Excellent ConditionThis is a gold (plated) Gillette Tech double-edge safety razor in fine condition in the original box. The Tech model first appeared in 1938 but I'm told that the Gold version didn't come out until slightly after the war, 1946-50.
The Tech is an interesting razor and a milestone for Gillette. Before the Tech, Gillette made it's safety razors by milling the bottom plate and casting the top plate. This was relatively expensive. Then, in 1932, Gillette hired a very young mechanical engineer, name
Herbert H. Grunman. He was assigned the task of figuring out how to make production more efficient. His contribution was a stamped bottom plate. The idea was old but the bottom plate needed to be very solid and stiff. Stamped metal was too flexible. Grunman decided that if they stamped a recess in the plate it would give it the firmness required. You can see that recess in the pictures.
It was around this time that Gillette also began to feature the safety bar. Models prior to the Tech were mostly open comb.
Here's the story, in case you are interested.

This particular example is Gillette's Gold Fat-Handle version. The model was first offered in 1938 but not in gold until after the war. The razor is in excellent shape. I see a tiny area of plate loss on one edge and the usual minute scratches on the top plate. I don't see any signs of use wear.
The case, like many others has not done as well over the decades. The interior velvet is faded (originally blue) and looks old. The exterior shows some wear on the faux-leather covering. The hinges are good and the case is physically intact.
A box of "Gillette Thin" blades is included. I don't know if they are consistent with the time period of the razor.
I use a macro lens to photograph my listings so that bidders can see, for themselves, what I'm describing.
